Shirlene was one of the nicest people I have ever known. She made people feel welcome and at ease. It is at times like these that I am especially glad for the years I spent in sadhana, for the austerities I performed on traveling sankirtana, which helped me to realize that I am different from my material body. It is one thing to read philosophy and profess faith, another thing to put it into practice. By the austerity of preaching, one becomes self-realized. Other elements are kindling for a fire. But without a spark, there is no fire.

In the Bhagavad-gita Sri Krishna says that whatever state one remembers when he quits his body he attains without fail: (Chapter 8, Text 6):

yam yam vapi smaran bhavam
 tyajaty ante kalevaram
tam tam evaiti kaunteya
 sada tad-bhava-bhavitah

Srila Prabhupada explains in the purport: "Of course the cumulative effect of the thoughts and actions of one's life influences one's thoughts at the moment of death; therefore the actions of this life determine one's future state of being."

So what happens if someone dies while in a coma? The cumulative effect is what matters, not exactly the neurons firing in the organ of the brain. The mind can exist without the brain, as has been shown by those who hovered above their bodies during surgery and have accurately recounted things that happened when their brains were immobilized by anesthesia. So a person's state of mind is durable, regardless of the state of the physical brain and body.

Even a humble bumblebee can distinguish and recall different human faces, according to UK researchers.

"Smart" Machines

One of the problems of having computers do things for us - like recognize our speach - is that we wind up spending too much time giving instructions to the machines on how to do the job. I just loaded dishes into the dishwasher and was imagining what that simple task would have been like if the machine had had 'intelligence' built into it.
"That glass looks dirty still. Using this series he gave a value of the number pi:3.14159265359 - correct to 11 decimals. His techniques were expanded upon by the mathematicians of the Kerala school which made major inroads into Calculus that were not repeated anywhere in the world until the 17th century by Newton and Leibnitz (who are popularly known as the inventors of calculus).

<link rel='related' href='http://www.canisius.edu/topos/rajeev.asp' title='Neither Newton nor Leibnitz - It's time to go up to the mountains and fast for forty days and nights. Or whatever it takes. People must get the difference between a person, what to speak of a loved one, and a thing.

Why?

If you find yourself not getting the difference between your feelings about a thing or event and your own kind - sentient beings - then you have taken an exit toward disaster. You will see signposts - guilt, unhappiness, self-hate. And if you don't stop and reorient yourself, even ask for directions, you will stay lost, and will end up at an ever-unpopular destination.

Disaster = ruination of your plans. You will lose any gain or comfort, and be alone in your pain.

So next time you feel rage rising in you about burnt toast, or a broken toaster, understand that it's between you and the toast. There isn't a person on earth who is responsible for your feelings. How you move from your annoying inconvenience and meet with the next person in your life is what decides: disaster or success, defeat or triumph.

GMail - Google's New Free Email Service

If you don't trust them with your mail, don't send to people on the service. But why all of the complaining? It's not like the people complaining the most have been forced to sign up. It's voluntary and free.

I would understand if Gmail were a draft, or a forced government program, or even if it were paid for with taxes. People who like lots of free space love this business plan. And the interface rocks. It's Java based - very little client-side code - so it is soooo much better (read faster with more functionality) than anyone else's webmail server - I know, I've got a Gmail account. Compared to Gmail, the other webmail services just suck; hotmail, yahoo!, ... every other one, including AOL's.

If you want to be concerned about your privacy, start closer to home, like with the carbon-copies of your credit card imprints that end up in department store dumpsters, supermarket servers, and your own garbage cans. Get worked-up over the supermarket savings-card programs that log every purchase you make. Who gets to see that data? What is being done with it? What if you went on a binge and bought a lot of liquor, and then decided to run for public office. It wouldn't take rocket-science for your detractors to get hold of some pretty embarassing data about you.

Privacy is an issue. No one at Google or any other legit business is saying that it isn't. But if I offer you free email, and tell you when you sign up that one of the conditions is that I will have my computers analyze your messages in order to put relevent text ads in the margins to pay for it, and you agree, then folks, that's just plain old business. It's the American way. It's smart capitalism. It's hecka cool. Don't like it? Don't sign up.

Squirrel X ... recondite, rural varmint

My kids love this site! But I got to say that I don't hold much hope for early retirement based on these ads. First of all, who clicks on them? I guess someone must or Google wouldn't be so hot and bothered by them, but I mean, I never click on ads unless there is a scantily dressed female model on the button (not naked or crotch shots, which to me are gross). Unelss it was for somthing that I was looking all over for and hadn't been able to find, or something I really wanted and the Google folks read my mind and put the ad up there just in time. Free, hot sex, now, across the street in five minutes. Right.

If Google reads this I may get cancelled from the program. Or maybe they will explain to me, show me studies, and convice me that there are legions of people who click on their text ads and that I am providing an invaluable service to them, and getting rich in the process.

For now, maybe I'll make enough to support my latte habit.

A Message From Ian

<img src="http://www.audioblogger.com/media/images/audioblogger.gif" class="audImg"border="0" alt="this is an audio post - Basically, the major money producing films have been analyzed and their plots reduced to a formula. According to the formula, popular and successful films have plot changes at certain points in the film, according to minutes. That is, after a certain number of minutes the plot changes in a certain way. This gives producers a way of gauging the possible success of a film for a certain genre. This formula is most usually applied to new films and new material by unknown writers and directors, but it is used across the board for big-money films.

I am working on a screenplay about a newbie to hollywood who accidentally writes a screenplay with killer plot-points. Producers clammer over his material, as agents race to sign him. Is his talent accidental, or schemed? The attraction of the film, at least its hook, is that the audience sees a film about plot points whilst experiencing them in the film itself.
(c) Tom Beek, 2004

The Official Dune Website

The Official Dune Website

Currents

You are obsessing anyway, so you might as well have the details.
